Hey folks,
Well, we have had a fantastic year with OUTPOST and would love you to come down and celebrate the final event for 2008 at Horse Bazaar.
Entry is free and it cranks up at 8:30p.m.

We are also very excited to have Kelly Ryal & Matt Gingold as our final feature performers for the year.

Having worked together in the past on theater productions, Kelly & Matt will be premiering their audio visual performance collaboration at Outpost this Wednesday.
Kelly will be showing off new sounds and music developed during a hectic year of non-stop audio production, and Matt will be using new software developed in open frameworks to play HD video and stills made during his recent travels to Thailand, Singapore and Japan.

There will be lots of opportunity for everyone to get their jam on and as always, new players/projectors are most welcome so tell your friends and..

October OUTPOST #23 delayed till November 5

Hi all,

Just so you know, this month’s OUTPOST has been delayed by a week to make way for a special STUTTER show at Horse Bazaar. If you haven’t been to a STUTTER show (curated by new music impresario powerhouse, Annalee Koernig) then why not take this chance to absorb the impact that Melbourne’s thriving underground and new music will have on your brain box.

This means that OUTPOST #23 for 29th October has been pushed back to Wednesday November 5th.

OUTPOST special event: Digital Fringe WEBCAST jam: Thursday OCTOBER 9th

As part of the Melbourne Digital Fringe (24 Sep - Oct 12), we are teaming up with the PlugNPlay crew to do a netcast gig on Thursday October 9th from Horse Bazaar.

For the netcast we’ll be using the free Mogulus software. The event will link up with other performances around Australia and overseas as part of this special Digital Fringe event.

You can either watch this event from the comfort of your preferred browser, or come on down to Horse Bazaar around 8pm on the 9th October to be a part of it.

Participants in this event are also uploading audio content for remixing in any way they see fit. We have started uploading some audio to the A.B.C.’s new collaborative on-line project Pool. Head over to our page where you can download the material to use freely under a Creative Commons license. There is more material to come and we are tagging it melb2008digitalfringe. Enter this as a search term to find any material that has been uploaded for the event.

Our second event for this years Electrofringe festival in Newcastle is on tonight starting 6pm @ Civic Arcade, Upstairs 403 Hunter Street, Newcastle N.S.W.

For all of you that are up here for this awesome festival and feel the need to let loose after a days worth of information and inspiration, please come on down with your gear in to join in on the jam session. The PA is ready and so are the projectors! Come armed with a few trusty plugs and adaptors and you’ll be on your way! Just approach anyone on the table to find out how you can get started.

In Newcastle tonight

Hi there people,

We start the first of 3 nights of jamming tonight as part of Electrofringe in Newcastle tonight.

If you’re in town, or driving down from Sydney to check out some the great events lined up over this weekend, remember to bring along your synths, laptops and whatever other electronic sound/video making devices. Come on down from 6 to 10 pm and plug that stuff in to join us in these special impro sessions!

If you’re looking for us during the day, we’ll either be hanging on the beach or taking in some of the awesome art events and shows packed into this killer weekend!

OUTPOST #22 - Digital Fringe Launch @ Horse Bazaar 7:30 this Wednesday 24th September

Greetings everybody,

Melbourne Digital Fringe launches this Wednesday the 24th September at Horse Bazaar and coincides with this month’s OUTPOST event, it’s going to be a cracker so come on down.

To kick off MDF, we are starting OUTPOST an hour earlier at 7:30 and featuring 6 short solo sets of 25 minutes followed by our regular open Jam.

New players are always welcome so bring your gear and have no fear!

Here is the audio lineup, we will be rotating VJ’s for each solo set and then all in for the Jams

7:30 Jpak will be busting out some deep dubby flavors

8:00 Soup bringing the heavy downbeat

8:30 Welcome Dear Friend folky electronic goodness

9:00 Amanaska the world beat meister will be performing tracks from Circles

9:30 Evil Jed will provide dark and moody beats, subdued basslines and spooky sounds

10:00 MulchWerk 3.0 (a.k.a. Ross Bencina) performing deutsche proto-elektro meets breakcore mayhem, and also previewing Audio Mulch version 2.0

Intermittent textural sound events between sets to be provided by Byron Scullin.

Outpost @ Electrofringe 2008

Spring is certainly shaping up to be very busy for the OUTPOST crew. We are travelling up to Newcastle to run an open jam for Electrofringe 2008.

Times and dates as follows:

Friday 3rd October from 6pm
Saturday 4th October from 6pm
Sunday 5th October (closing night party) from 10pm until late

Outpost @ La Trobe Uni Art Museum 17-19 Sep

As part of the 2008 Darebin Music Feast, OUTPOST perform over three evenings at La Trobe University Art Museum from the 17th - 19th September.
This performance/workshop is free and will run for 7 til 8:30 pm.

In this workshop OUTPOST will take the exhibition Neomorphics (Neugemüse), by local visual artist Vera Möller, and use her work as a stimulus to create new audio and visual work projected on to the walls of the gallery.

Vera Möller’s art explores the region where the real meets the imagined and the constructed encounters the natural. Delving into her knowledge gained through her studies as a biologist, her work contemplates life forms yet to be identified or discovered. Möller considers specimens that might evolve naturally in the future, and reflects on organisms that could possibly be created with the aid of biotechnology. Neomorphics (Neugemüse) includes a selection of collages, watercolours and sculptures, many shown for the first time, inviting us into a special world of wonder, amazement and study.

Participants are invited to bring their own video footage, mp3 players, synthesisers, samplers and any other noise/video making device. Those without their own gear are welcome to come along and join in the experience. Come down for a tasty live audio visual jam looks, sounds, and share a drink and a chat about the hardware and software used in the performance.

Get down to Horse Bazaar this Wednesday the 27th of August for OUTPOST,
Jean Poole hearts real-time cinema. This generally means all at the same space-time, mixes and matches of the following :
soundscapes, messy motion graphics, modular lo-fi animations, pop culture sound-and-vision bites, self-made short film and music video snippets, amateur pixel hypnotism, drones you have known and loved, and often a sense of not knowing whether the computer has crashed or not.

As always the jams are on so…

July 2008 Wrap and Darebin Music Feast

It was great to have folks standing defiant against the chilly Melbourne winter and coming down to check out and perform at last night’s OUTPOST. First up, has to be said that Scotty Baker (aka abre ojos) performed a fantastic solo set on his suitcase modular synth and video, complete with vocal input! Great to see a few new faces down for the jams as well as the dedicated regulars. Big up to OUTPOST video queen Lucy Benson who came through with sourcing a video mixer in the 11th hour.

OUTPOST will be performing at La Trobe University (Bundoora) Art Museum as part of the Darebin Music Feast as part of the Vera Möller: Neomorphics exhibition. We are performing at around 7pm on the 17th,18th and 19th of September. Stay tuned for further details as they come to light.

abre ojos performing at July OUTPOST #20

After coming down to the jam with his suitcase modular synth last month, we had to ask abre ojos to be our feature artist for July OUTPOST. abre ojos is Scott Baker who after apprenticing under Alan Lamb and learning the power of the drone creates improvisations of dense tangible noise from an analogue modular synthesiser with live visuals inspired by zombies films, conspiracy theories and hidden truths. abre ojos is a Portuguese sailing term when moving through dangerous waters meaning “watch out” or “open your eyes”. Scott will be performing both sound and video so come and check it out.

An awesome time was had by all at last night’s event. Big thanks to everyone who came down to play/perve/drink! The feature set from Soup was inspiring and it was great to hear him on the guitar, processing it up live and creating some lush cinematic textures. To those of you who came to jam for the first time, excellent work, please come again! As for our regulars, your continued support and input makes this monthly event a highlight.

What’s on for June OUTPOST #19

Hey there peeps,
OUTPOST brings the beat back this Wednesday the 25th of June at Horse Bazaar from 8:30 p.m. As per usual, entry is a bargain at $0.

We are most pleased to have l’enfent terrible of Melbourne downbeat, Thomas Campbell (aka. Soup) coming down to do a feature slot and no doubt jam up as well. Soup, former producer of Melbourne Trip-hop band ‘Miso’ has been reveling in his downtime/studio time after the band played there last show two months ago. Soup’s production style has developed with an emphasis on live sound manipulation and next week’s OUTPOST will be a continuation of this approach, although now he will be incorporating his guitar into his arsenal of sonic material.

Jammers, come on down and get set up early. As always, new players/projectors are most welcome so tell your friends and..

Awesome work to everyone who came down and put in for Analog Outpost. It was really great to see such a variety of gear from old Roland and Yamaha boxes to a pocket theremin to a plethora of guitar pedals and a Moog Voyager.

Huge thanks to Dylab and Steve Law for doing a few extra trips to the car and bringing down the hardware for some inspiring solo sets. I have cut together video of the first jam and Boz recorded the second jam as audio. They will be posted up shortly so stay tuned.

Outpost goes Old School for April

This month, OUTPOST is going Old School with an emphasis on analog sound equipment for both the feature artists and jams.

Melbourne electronic music icon Zen Paradox (aka. Steve Law) is coming down to do a feature set after ripping it up in the jams a few months back.
Steve has been producing avant garde and electro-acoustic music since 1984, and in 1996 was awarded the ABC Classic FM Computer Music Award for his composition “Urbania”.

606 meister DyLAB (aka. Dylan Davis) is bringing a few of his retro Roland boxes to give us a feature show on his birthday which should be full of squelchy goodness!

We are very excited about the jam component for this months event. Jammers, bring down your synths, samplers, groove boxes, fx and any other noise making devices.
If you want to use your laptop to process any of these sounds live, crank it up!

As always new players/projectors are most welcome so tell your friends and..

What’s the deal with OUTPOST #17?

Boys and girls come out to play for OUTPOST #17 this Wednesday the 26th of March at Horse Bazaar from 8:30p.m.

We are very pleased to have a solo set from Jason Hearn (a.k.a. Jase from Outta Space) for OUTPOST #17. Formerly based in Perth, Jase has just finished prep for his new live show after spending 5 years engaged purely in studio projects. The new show has a very hands-on approach to on-the-fly, improvised live sequencing. Jase’s music spans anything from downbeat glitch-hop, deep-n-fruity electro house, through to dark breaks and hyper-tempo drum’n'bass so we are eager to hear what he has in store for this months event.

Sammy Counihan is also coming down to do a mashed up set with decks and FX which will be fun!

NEWS ON THE JAMS FOR OUTPOST

Everyone did some fantastic interpretation of last months themes for the jams so we are going to explore a couple more for OUTPOST #17.

1. One Sound Jam. Use only one sound and develop.

2. BPM shift. Using a random number generator, we are going to set a couple of tempos and morph between them throughout a jam.
